The 37th edition of the Ryder Cup will be played
at the Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky. The Ryder Cup has evolved
over the years from a two-day, eight-person foursome/ singles competition
to a three-day, 12-person foursome/fourball/singles event. These biennial
matches began in 1927 between the United States and Great Britain. Players
from Ireland were added to the British team in 1971 but it was not until
1979 when players from continental Europe were combined with GB&I
that created a formidable opponent. For the U.S.
Now that the European team has achieved competitve balance with the U.S.,
the Ryder Cup has emerged as one of the most popular sporting events
in the world. Since 1979, the Europeans have won eight matches and five
of the last six. For the first time in Ryder Cup history, the U.S. will
enter the matches as the underdog.
